Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house for a specific Jury member. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the publicity industry.
